The Lights Went Out in Florida

There was a bit of a computer emergency here in our household last night. I'm not exactly sure if its resolved or not but for now I've got it to a usable state. The computer I use is a Dell laptop and its on its semi-last legs. I'd say its probably about 5 or 6 years old now and I've been nursing it along for a couple of years now because I'm too cheap to buy a new one.

For almost a month now I've been seeing a slight flicker on my screen and until last night I was sort of attributing it to maybe the battery or power supply. I'd fiddle with the power cord and sometimes it would stop flickering and other times it wouldn't. Not a huge deal, I'm not doing anything on my computer that is really impacted by flickering. Its just another thing you deal with when you use an older computer. The keys stick a little, spots on certain keys or the touch pad are worn down, and the screen flickers.

No big deal, right? I'm not so sure now. Last night I was solving world peace screwing around on line and my screen went blank. Yes, blank. As in black. So, I did a series of restarting, rebooting, removing the battery and nothing worked. When I'd start the computer back up the screen was perfect and I thought "OMG thank you God for fixing this computer" and then after seeing the home page for about 2 seconds (no lie) it went black again. FAIL. I could see that the icons on my desktop were still visible but it was very, very dark.I tried bumping up the brightness and it didn't help but after Googling (does that count as a verb?) I saw a suggestion to DIM the brightness. I guess it has something to do with the power being used to keep it bright? I restarted again and as soon as I saw the Windows logo pop up I dimmed the brightness and lo and behold, it worked!

Working on a computer with a dim screen is difficult and tonight I've got it adjusted a bit and its usable but it was a really good wake up call to back up all my stuff. I'd be upset if I lost everything on my computer. Its happened before and it sucked. I spent about 3 hours last night with a back up running and copying everything to an external hard drive. Its not neat or anything like that but its backed up which I should definitely being doing this more often.

Have you looked at laptop options lately? OMG there are too many options. Add in the fact that I don't really know what I'm looking for and it begins to get really overwhelming. Sounds like this will be a project I need to make more of a priority, just in case. So far my plan on winning one of those cool HP Touch screen computers of blog contests is not working out so well ;)

What a Whipper Snapper

Ok I feel old. This dude on Jeopardy doesn't look old enough to be a Urologist!

Conrad Murray, again

Well, the verdict is in and he's already in jail. I think what he did was wrong but I don't think it was murder. More just that it was one of those things he should have known better than to do. At the very least I hope that this will serve as a wake up call to other doctors AND to celebrities that this sort of thing is not safe to do. I do like Michael Jackson and I really, really wish I had been able to see him in concert but he was a sick man with a lot of problems. RIP MJ

Whale Almost Eats Surfer

I'm pretty sure I'd have a heart attack if I was the woman out there on a surf board. The whale that almost ate the woman is enormous

I'm in Awe of This Pregnant Mom Dancing

I can't even begin to describe how in awe I am of this woman dancing. She is 40 weeks plus 4 days overdue and does a dance to hopefully "get things started" to the song by the Black Eyed Peas. Oh and she's pregnant with twins. There is no awkward waddle or anything, she's got moves!

Instagram Photos

I'm just starting to get into the Instagram App on my iPhone 4S and I must say, I really like the photos others have posted online from this camera/phone. Here are a few recent pics I've taken on my phone and messed around with to send in to Instagram. These are all sand sculptures (except the one of my cat, duh) and are incredibly detailed up close in person. I have more to share but need to organize them first.

Anyone use Instagram?

New Google Reader Sucks

Anyone else out there think the new Google Reader sucks? I do. Its nice and bright and all that but OMG it hurts my eyes. I miss the line dividing the list of my blogs from the feed and the way that the text wasn't on all white. We've also lost the option to click on the bottom of any post to share it, now we are stuck with sharing Google+. Yeah, yeah I can but I don't want to do it that way. I liked it the old way and would occasionally email blog posts to myself to read later or sometimes send them to friends or family. I don't use Google+ and I don't want to because its not private. I don't want to share everything that I like, dislike or want to share with everyone. I have people that know my Gmail, some people from whom I do not advertise that email address and some don't even know I went back to having a blog. I don't want all those people mixing it up just yet ;)

Here is a link I found to share things semi-privately: Share privately with new Google Reader

Just a minor vent but BOO--it sucks! I am not usually so against new changes to sites or technology but I am NOT a fan of this one

And for the record I'm not a fan of the new Blogger interface or my new Gmail interface either but with both Blogger and Gmail I have the option to use the old interface (which I do) and I do not see that option with Reader. If its available please point me in that direction! If its not then I will survive, but not with Reader. The stark white background and no dividing lines hurts my eyes and I'd rather stop using it altogether than deal with it. I did see that Feedly is another option and syncs directly with Google Reader so I'm giving that a try.
