Why not gay marriages?
I wonder later when we look back at things like North Carolina voting to ban gay marriages, if we will see it the same way as the South did back earlier during the fight for Civil Rights? As I get older, I don't understand why its such a big deal. I grew up in a Christian home, where being gay was WRONG but as an adult, I disagree with the way that our country has handled this topic.
Even IF you think its wrong, its not OUR place to judge and I guarantee there are plenty of heterosexual couples doing much more freaky stuff behind closed doors than some homosexual couples. I think its more important to be kind and to accept people for who they are at heart, not by their lifestyle if it doesn't affect me. What I DO agree with is that if two consenting adults love each other and want to start a family then they should be able to do what makes them happy, just like the rest of us. I also agree with the fact that in times of an emergency the person's partner should be able to be in the room, visit or make medical decisions if thats what the two of them want. It makes me sad to know that there are men and women out there who did not get a chance to say goodbye their family member because hospital rules allowed for family only. That just seems wrong that people have not been able to say goodbye or provide comfort to the person they love. We shouldn't be treating people that way, even if you think what they are doing is wrong.

Yummmmm Catnip
A friend of mine was thinking of growing catnip in her yard because it's a natural mosquito repellant but eventually changed her mind because she didn't want the neighborhood cats to roll around in her yard. I've had cats the majority of my life and had never given any of them catnip, can you believe that? I'm still not quite sure what to do with it, other than put in toys to get them to play with them more. Do they eat it? I bought a new scratch pad for the cats and it came with catnip that you are supposed to sprinkle on top before you give it to the cats. I tried it and OMG it's like they were ready to make sweet love to the scratch pad. Rolling over and over and doing all sorts of twists and turns just to rub it all over their body! I will definitely be giving them more, they LOVED it!

Could it be Karma?
I heard some news today about some people at work and IF (and thats a BIG if) what I heard is true, I think someone is going to be regretting a lot of stuff. I can kind of see why they'd organize this person under my boss but if it happens the dynamics in the office will drastically change. Imagine two people who hate each other, ones a bitter almost 60 yr old woman and the other is a guy in his 40s who can be quite the brown noser. If its true it will be very, very interesting.
Here are some funny karma photos I found:

My Life in Haiku
Things have been busy around here, the pollen in the air is killing me and I've been sort of preoccupied thinking about a girl I used to go to church with who just had a stroke. She's in her mid-30s like me and has 4 kids and had one of the worst strokes possible but in the last two weeks has made miraculous improvements. Still, the idea of someone I used to know going through that is a tough pill to swallow. Why should I complain about the pollen in the air giving my sinus headaches? Why should I complain about work? Why should I complain about having to work in the rain and getting soaked this weekend? Stuff like this really makes you think!
Tomorrow I run
I have lost motivation

THE Permission Slip
Holy cow, I was just checking my daughter's folder that comes home every Friday and she got THE permission slip for THAT movie that almost everyone I know saw in school in 5th grade. Did your school or your children's school show the movie about your changing bodies and sex? Around here its one of those things that EVERYONE does in 5th grade and although it doesn't show anything too risque, when you are 11 and they talk about boobs, periods and body hair, the movie is a big, exciting rite of passage. When I saw the permission slip I sent my brother a text message to see if he could guess what movie I was talking about and he got it right away. I said, "so, your niece got a permission slip to see a movie, any guesses?" and he said "changing bodies, 5th grade, duh!"
My favorite part of that whole thing was the goody bags with samples and brochures. My mom didn't tell me a whole lot of stuff about any of that so I read and reread those things for years! Plus, duh, I love free stuff.
That movie was the first time I saw an actual penis and it was a total accident. The parents were invited to preview the movies at school to see if they felt comfortable with their children watching them with the rest of the group. I was in the library checking out a few books and noticed in the conference room behind the check out desk you could see the videos on the large screen on the wall. I didn't realize what was on the tv before I went to check out but when I looked up from signing my name on the cards I saw a shot of a penis, up close and in detail. Seriously, I was so surprised I'll never be able to get that visual out of my head. I was not expecting that at all, it still sorta makes me chuckle thinking about how big my eyes must have been when I saw that. I don't know what the school was thinking showing that stuff in the conference room with the blinds on the window open. Luckily, that was probably the last time they did that because right after I saw the screen a kid next to me yelled out, "look, its a wiener!" I bet next year they didn't make that mistake!

So Long Discovery!
It's kind of weird that NASA's Shuttle program is now over. I grew up in Florida, right on the Space Coast and did not miss one single shuttle launch and it makes me sad to think that such a HUGE part of my childhood is over. I know that I took the program for granted, its very easy to when you see something happen so many times that it sometimes was more of an annoyance (traffic, people, pets getting scared with the sonic booms) but I do feel very fortunate to have seen the launches.
My grandparents live right across the river so I had one of the best views available and even saw a few launches from the Space Center property when I worked there. It was absolutely incredible to feel something so powerful and know the danger the astronauts were on their way to space. Space, as in the moon and planets and stars, the space station--thats nuts that they launched from Central FL and were up there in space and not even actually on a planet! Its hard to wrap your head around that!
I remember seeing the Challenger, I was in first grade and I remember knowing something was wrong. I remember getting in trouble for running down the hall from our lunch room, but nothing would prevent me from missing a launch. Certainly not a teacher's warning to slow down ;) I remember it was cold outside (for FL) and another teacher brought a blanket outside to throw over her shoulders instead of a jacket. Once the shuttle launched I overheard her say "oh I guess they must have sent two up at once and now they've separated". Even in that split second I knew she was wrong. Not even just logically, two at once, wouldn't we have heard about this plan? But I also had a feeling something was different and not in a good way. Our tiny town basically shut down after that tragedy. The majority of our mothers and fathers worked in some capacity at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and when they had layoffs, it meant bad news for those depending on those jobs--like our whole town.
I remember the Columbia tragedy too. That was bizarre. Shuttle landings aren't always heard, the direction of the wind, time of day, time of year all has an effect on the sound of the two sonic booms you hear once they enter the atmosphere again. The crowds are gone by then and the re-entry is much less dramatic than when they are launched so by default they are a much smaller deal. My habit was to watch it on tv until I knew it would be visible, then go outside to see it in person. I watched on tv that day as it flew over Texas and things were not normal and soon we found out what happened. I was upset by the death's of the astronauts, when I worked at KSC I met some of them and took pictures of them on their way to go to the launch pad. It was also heartbreaking to know that they did not die right when they hit they re-entered Earth, that is so very, very sad. Once they figured out happened and they took a hangar at KSC to lay out all the pieces of the shuttle, employees and family were invited to come see the wreckage. A little odd maybe but I was amazed at how much work it must have been to not only collect the pieces but to lay them out so exactly. Here is a what I'm talking about. Every found was brought back to ITS specific location. Sad to know so much did survive while all souls were lost.
Where were YOU when these tragedies happened? What do you remember about the early Shuttle launches

Start Something that Matters
Have you heard of Toms shoes? I had heard about them, just pretty much knowing the "buy a shoe, give a shoe" sorta thing, but no back story about the company, idea or founder. When I saw this cover, I thought that the guy looked familiar but since I watch way too much crap tv, I thought it was probably just that I'd seen the guy on Oprah or something. Once I got a couple of pages into it I realized I recognized him from The Amazing Race, one of the early seasons I actually watched and from meeting him out in Vegas. His sister was dating a guy in my step mom's (step-cousin, cousin? who knows!) nephew's band and when we saw them in concert, both he and his sister were there. I need to go back and look at my pictures and the dates when I went out there, I'm wondering if this was before he took his trip to Argentina and saw the need for shoes or if it was after.
Toms stands for shoes of tomorrow's not because the owner is named Tom like I, and other, originally have thought. Blake went to Argentina for a trip and saw that the native Argentinian people were wearing these simple canvas shoes everywhere and found that they were not only comfortable but also versatile. On that same trip he also learned that the children in Argentina often went without shoes because their families did not have enough money to purchase them and that any donated shoes were not often in their size. By that time, Blake had already started quite a few businesses and when he saw the idea of the shoes and the need of the children he knew he had to find a way to combine the two.
Blake's idea was pretty brilliant and it was really interesting to read how everything took shape. Once the idea got out there it sorta took off. What started out as a sample set of 250 pairs of shoes to see if they could make it work turned into sales of over 10,000 just a few short months later! Imagine what a shock that would be but also how humbling to know that because of your idea, 10,000 people who could not afford shoes would now have a pair. Pretty cool, huh? Makes me want to get up off my lazy butt and do SOMETHING!!!!
